New Work

Yesterday and today I had the opportunity to take a class from a local artist, Karen Reimer. The class was Watercolor Stained Collage. We began by staining rice papers with watercolors and later used them to create a collage.

I decided to do my collage on 12" x 12" canvas instead of watercolor paper, and by the time I left class last night I had a background, but no idea where I was going with the rest of the piece. I found the image of the Statue of Liberty in one of the instructor's magazines and everything else fell into place.

Here is a closer view ....

Lots and lots of layers! Not sure I'm finished with this piece, but overall I like how it turned out.

Until next time!

Abandoned

Poplars are standing there still as death

and ghosts of dead men
meet their ladies walking
two by two beneath the shade

and standing on the marble steps.

There is the sound of music echoing
through the open door

and in the field there is
another sound tinkling in the cotton:
chains of bondmen dragging on the ground.

The years go back with an iron clank,
a hand is on the gate,
a dry leaf trembles on the wall.

Ghosts are walking.
They have broken roses down
and poplars stand there still as death.

Spring Break

Well, Spring Break is FINALLY here and what happens? I'm sick and today my kiddo woke up with fever and coughing ... lovely vacation. But I can't complain ... at least we don't have to be anywhere! We're mostly lying around recuperating and trying to feel better.

These are pages I worked on in my friend Paula's altered house book. We met last week to trade and all of the books are looking fantastic! We have one final swap and we get our original books back. I'm already thinking of a few things I want to add to mine ...

This (above) is my favorite page, The Art Staff. I cut these out of a 1933 high school yearbook I found at a garage sale for $1.00. I've used the images for lots of different ATC's and collages. I think they fit perfectly in this little opening in the book.

The above page has another little hidden foldout ... on the outside I put a quote "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." I like that. On the inside is a girl with a crow ... I knew I had to include a crow in Paula's book because she loves them.

That's all for now ... if you are lucky enough to have time off this week, I wish you a happy Spring Break with good weather and abundant art!

City of Angels

This is a new altered book page I did for my friend Reba. Her "house" book had a theme of angels.

I thought these were sweet angels and I love that they are looking over the grandmother with her granddaughter. I loved my grandmother very much and I always think of her and feel like she is looking down and watching over me.

Enjoy the new art!

Just Say NO ... to the Circus!

Normally I post (infrequently) about art, but today I would like to call your attention to something you probably don't think or care much about. The Circus. For many years, I have been sickened by the reports of rampant abuse of captured animals used for "entertainment."

This weekend while treating my daughter to ice cream at our favorite local shop, I noticed a large, brightly colored poster advertising that Circus Gatti was coming to town. Making a mental note of the dates, I realized it was too late to write a letter of protest to our local paper or contact the sponsors of the show to launch a campaign against hosting this horrible and inhumane event in our city.

My daughter and I had never discussed the circus before, but after I told my girl just a small sampling of the abuses and court cases that involved captured and tortured animals, she is as outraged as I am. And no, I am not a tree-hugging, card carrying member of PETA or anything. I think some of their antics are outrageous, but I think their work to stop circus animal cruelty is vital to putting an end to the animal act circus industry. Please click on the link to watch videos and testimonies from former circus employees.

Please, before you take your child to an animal act circus or if you know of somebody who plans to do this, consider the following:

  • Animals used in circuses do not perform because they want to; they perform because they are afraid not to.
  • Trainers carry tools such as sharp metal bull hooks, various types of whips, sticks, and hand-held hot shots that deliver a jolt of electricity.
  • If circuses relied only on positive reinforcement, trainers would be carrying bags of treats instead of weapons.
  • The majority of animals used in circuses were captured in the wild when they were babies. They spend their lives forced to eat, drink, sleep, defecate, and urinate inside a cramped cage.
  • Constant chaining, lack of exercise, long hours standing on hard surfaces in feces and urine, and performing physically unnatural and awkward tricks all lead to crippling injuries, which often times go untreated by veterinarians and may lead to death.
  • In nature, bears don't ride bicycles, elephants don't sit upright on tubs, and tigers don't jump through flaming hoops. Animals would never perform these tricks without punishment.
  • Circuses routinely pick up transient workers who include child predators, violent convicts, and drug abusers.
Please boycott the circus in your city, urge your friends to do the same, write letters to your newspaper, contact your school board and circus sponsors to stand up for these tortured animals who don't have a voice.

Last, choose to support Animal Free Circuses such as the enchanting Cirque du Soleil who has proven magnificently that the circus does not need to feature captured and abused wild animals to entertain.

Until next time,
Adrienne

Auld Lang Syne

Literally translated, this well known phrase sung at the stroke of midnight at the beginning of each new year means "old long since" or "long, long ago". This made me think of my blog ... so I'm blowing the dust off my keyboard and wishing all three of my faithful readers a very (belated) happy new year.

This altered book page I did last month in my friend Laura's house book. I will leave you with another one ...

As you may have noticed, I'm playing around with a new template because it's a new year and I'm bored with the old one. Stay warm, eat nutritious foods, walk your dog, and let me know what's new in your world.

Adrienne
